Though it’s far too easy to distill Cape Cod down into a singular destination, in all actuality, you’ll find that the charming Cape Cod towns that dot this peninsula are diverse in terms of their history, their character, and their recreational offerings. Take Provincetown, for example. Located at the tip of the Cape, this town is known for its vibrant arts scene, eclectic shops, and bustling nightlife. In contrast, the nearby town of Chatham is known for its classic New England architecture with quaint boutiques, while our own Harwich is known for its historic whaling port, cranberry bogs, fabulous restaurants, and so much more.Â
Exploring the various Cape Cod towns is a fun way to get to know the Cape and promises a well-rounded and enriching getaway experience. The only thing that makes a trip here better is the chance to unwind in complete bliss. Guests at our Bed and Breakfast on Cape Cod will enjoy time in modern, beautifully appointed rooms, accompanied by exquisite gardens and grounds and the warm hospitality of our hosts. Harwich makes for an ideal base to explore the Cape, particularly when you can call our Inn your home away from home. Book your room today, and get ready for a quintessential Cape Cod experience this summer.Â
The Best Cape Cod Towns
In total, there are 15 Cape Cod towns worthy of your exploration. Though we’re all neighbors and occupy space on this stunning 65-mile-long Peninsula, you’ll find plenty of distinction between these towns. To truly immerse yourself in a classic experience on the Cape, it’s important to visit these towns and get to know their unique cultural, historical, and natural aspects.Â
Moreover, visiting many more than just one of these Cape Cod towns gives you more opportunities to get to know the people who live and work here, which is one of the best ways to get an authentic taste of any area you visit. We love helping our guests make these personal connections to the area, starting right here in our own town of Harwich.Â
Coastal Living Magazine named Harwich the country’s second happiest seaside town. While we think it’s probably the happiest, we’ll take the distinction of being the second happiest! Harwich is a city made up of seven smaller villages. It lies along the Nantucket Sound and was a historic whaling port and home to a thriving fishing industry. You’ll find plenty of former Sea Captain’s homes here, including our very own Inn.
Though Harwich’s whaling and fishing industries have largely moved on, it’s now a thriving destination for cranberry bogs. Visiting during the peak harvest of these sweet-tart berries each fall, touring bogs, and attending local festivals will surely be a highlight as you get to know this most charming of Cape Cod towns.Â
Harwich Port, one of the seven villages, is the most popular and scenic part of Harwich. Here, you’ll find plenty of upscale boutiques, high-end and delicious eateries, art galleries, and more. The coastline of Harwich is a series of beaches punctuated by picturesque harbors, which means there are ample opportunities for lounging at the beach or taking to the water. Aside from the beach and water-based adventures, there are so many incredible things to do in Harwich, and we’d love to share our favorites with you the next time you stay at our Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast.
Beyond Harwich, there are plenty more charming communities worth visiting. Below, we’ve listed a few more of our favorite Cape Cod towns for you to visit.
- At the tip of the Cape is the vibrant arts-forward destination of Provincetown. Apart from this vibrant culture, there’s something special about being so far out in the Atlantic Ocean. At times, it feels like you’re at the end of the world. This town presents some of the best opportunities for rugged and off-the-beaten-path adventures if you’re so inclined.Â
- Not too far from Harwich is another of our favorite Cape Cod towns, Chatham. Chatham is known for classic New England architecture, the famous Chatham Lighthouse, and pristine, wild, natural beauty. Off the coast are wild barrier islands, tidal shoals, sandbars that come and go with the tides, and plenty of saltwater inlets. Chatham’s Main Street is quaint and dotted with plenty of upscale boutiques representing some of the Cape’s best shopping.Â
- The odds are that your trip to Cape Cod will involve Hyannis, at least in some way. Hyannis is the commercial and transportation hub of Cape Cod, but it’s also home to world-class shopping, high-end restaurants, and plenty of history. Notably, this is where you’ll find the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum. Hyannis’ Main Street is also Cape Cod’s longest walkable shopping street. This is also where you’ll catch the ferries to Nantucket and Oak Bluffs.
- Up next on our list of the best Cape Cod towns to visit this year is Falmouth. Falmouth is found on the southwestern portion of the Cape at the start of the Peninsula. Though there are fabulous Cape Cod beaches everywhere you turn, the beaches here are particularly lovely. Along Main Street, you’ll find several cute shops, diners, and cafes to explore, rounding out your adventure. This is also where you’ll find the famed Nobska Light, one of our favorite Cape Cod lighthouses.Â
- If you’re looking for a fabulous but perhaps underrated destination on Cape Cod, consider visiting the quaint town of Wellfleet. This small and secluded spot is found on the northern stretch of the peninsula. It’s particularly well known for its noncommercialized historic Main Street. Perhaps more important than the town of Wellfleet itself is the natural splendor that surrounds it. This town serves as the end point of the Cape Cod Rail Trail, but it also is the gateway to the 1,000+ acre Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
