Lobster Roll at Chatham Pier Fish Market

If the Chatham Pier Fish Market isn’t yet on your Cape Cod summer itinerary, let us help get it there. One of Cape Cod’s most prolific things to eat is the famous lobster roll. This exquisite dish is made of a golden toasted bun packed with fresh-caught, buttery, and creamy soft lobster. You can’t visit New England in the summer without enjoying a lobster roll, a guaranteed hit with everyone. Can you even say you visited New England without trying this delectable dish?

There are a few different ways to eat these famed lobster rolls (we certainly have our favorite!), but there’s little doubt in our mind that the Chathtam Pier Fish Market has a solid candidate for the best one. The Chatham Pier Fish Market can, of course, be found right on Chatham Pier, right on the easternmost point of Cape Cod. The Chatham Pier Fish Market was founded in the 1950s and continues to be one of the best places to get fresh lobster, clams, and more.

Fresh catches come in off the boats daily, offering you a front row seat to the action. While you eat your lobster roll at the Chatham Pier Fish Market, you’ll have a great view of this busy fishing harbor. The onsite picnic tables offer gorgeous views of the water, and that fresh, salty air just makes everything taste better, even a buttery New England lobster roll. In addition to lobster rolls, the Chatham Pier Fish Market is also beloved by locals and is a go-to resource for the freshest daily catch.

If the Chatham Pier Fish Market doesn’t quite scratch your itch for fresh Cape Cod Lobster and you want to try another variation, here are a few more spots to try.

  1. Few things beat a lobster roll from seafood shacks on the beach, and one of our favorites is Sesuit Harbor Cafe in neighboring Dennis. There’s a great raw bar here, too.
  2. If you find yourself at the tip of the Cape in Provincetown, head to The Canteen in Provincetown. Open year-round, this casual beachside spot serves one of the best hot lobster rolls around. Our favorite way is hot, brushed with melted butter, and tucked into a toasted bun.
  3. If you’re looking for an underrated spot to grab a lobster roll near our Bed and Breakfast, Captain Frosty’s in Dennis is a good bet!
  4. Like the Chatham Pier Fish Market, the Young’s Fish Market in Orleans serves up a fresh, delicious lobster roll that’s hard to beat.
  5. Brax Landing Restaurant in Harwich is another fantastic option, and certainly offers one of the best lobster rolls on Cape Cod. It also offers beautiful views over the Saquatucket Harbor, and it’s just minutes from our Bed and Breakfast.

Things to do in Chatham in the summer

Whether you’re into exploring nature or soaking up the summer sun on the beach, your days will be well spent.

Once your lobster roll is gone, here are a few more of our favorite things to do in Chatham:

  1. You can’t visit New England without checking out a lighthouse. Chatham is home to three of the best Cape Cod lighthouses: Stage Harbor Light, Chatham Light, and Monomoy Point Light. Visiting these iconic beacons is one of the best things to do in Chatham (let alone Cape Cod).
  2. Spend time strolling through downtown Chatham’s Main Street, which is undeniably one of the best things to do in Chatham. Here you’ll find theaters, art galleries, one-of-a-kind chic shops, and plenty of places to grab a drink.
  3. A trip to Chatham isn’t complete without being out on the ocean. Whether you want to go whale watching with Outermost Harbor Marine or take a shark tour and fishing charter with Bluewater Entertainment, you’ll be hard pressed to find more thrilling things to do in Chatham. At Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Chatham Shark Center, you’ll learn about shark and gray seal recovery efforts. They also offer several shark tours, the ultimate Cape Cod experience.
  4. If you’re looking for an active adventure, take a bike ride along Chatham’s Old Colony Rail Trail. The trail ends in downtown Chatham.
  5. Get up close and personal with the sea and spend more time outdoors by renting a kayak, sailboat, or paddleboard. Check out Chatham Sail to rent your watercraft.
  6. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to visit the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge. It’s one of the best things to do in Chatham and is home to over 7,000 acres of wilderness, hundreds of harbor seals, and migratory birds.
  7. You’ll want to visit one of Chatham’s many beaches during your summer getaway. Enjoy the sand dunes, seabirds, and ocean waves. A few local favorites include Lighthouse Beach, Harding Beach, Ridgevale Beach, and North Beach.
  8. Visit the saltwater Mill or Oyster Ponds for a quiet walk in nature. Mill Pond features a half-mile nature walk, known as the Overlook Trail, which is a popular spot for birding. Oyster Pond boasts a sunny beach, and blue crab fishing is a popular activity among the locals.
  9. Take advantage of the summer sun and play a round of golf at one of the golf courses in Chatham. Work on your drive at The Captain’s Golf Course or Eastward Ho!
  10. If you’re into history, Chatham has several museums worth checking out. The Chatham Historical Society’s Atwood House Museum features artifacts from China, including glass, paintings, and nautical charts, all dating back to the 19th century and earlier.
