We love the long and warm summer days on the Cape, but if we had to choose a favorite season, it’d be fall. The crisp, cool air that leaves plenty of room for relaxed days on the beach and fewer people to compete with at area attractions leads to a magical experience. Whether enjoying a leisurely walk along the beach, touring iconic Cape Cod lighthouses, watching a stunning sunset, or simply basking in the autumnal glow, Cape Cod’s natural beauty provides the perfect backdrop for unwinding.
This iconic destination, with its picturesque landscapes and quaint coastal towns, offers a unique combination of things to do and places to admire. The gentle sounds of waves caressing the shore, the soft rustle of seagrass in the breeze, and the calming scent of the ocean all contribute to the calming atmosphere. It’s something you have to experience to understand, but once you do, you’ll want to come back time and time again. Though there is a diverse array of things to do on Cape Cod, a highlight is the opportunity to visit iconic Cape Cod lighthouses.Â
These lighthouses stand as proud sentinels of the region’s maritime history and afford visitors glimpses into the Cape’s storied past. Moreover, lighthouses in Cape Cod are situated in some of the most picturesque destinations, offering a welcome opportunity to explore miles of protected, sandy shorelines. The panoramic vistas from these vantage points will leave you with a sense of awe and will no doubt leave you inspired and renewed at the end of your journey.

The Best Cape Cod Lighthouses
There’s no shortage of Cape Cod lighthouses dotting the shorelines—there are 14 of them, to be exact—not including those on surrounding islands. These iconic landmarks are beacons standing sentinel along the coast. Though they are mostly known today for their iconic beauty, these lighthouses remind us of the Cape’s longstanding maritime traditions. Though the operating times vary throughout the year, many Cape Cod lighthouses are open to the public for tours.Â
If you’re looking for a beautiful way to spend an afternoon touring the Cape, here are seven beautiful Cape Cod lighthouses to visit.Â
- About 20 minutes from our Inn, you’ll encounter the first of our favorite Cape Cod lighthouses, the Stage Harbor Lighthouse at Hardings Beach. Though it was built nearly 150 years ago, it’s one of the youngest lighthouses on Cape Cod. The lighthouse is private and not open for public tours, but you can enjoy great views from the beach.Â
- Nearby is another of our favorite Cape Cod lighthouses, the iconic Chatham Lighthouse. This historic light is 48 feet tall and overlooks the Chatham Bar. It is still in operation today and occasionally opens for public tours.Â
- Continue toward Provincetown, and you’ll soon run into one of the most famous Cape Cod lighthouses, the Nauset Light. This iconic red and white structure is open for public tours on select days, including an invitation to climb to the top for panoramic coastal views.Â
- While visiting the Nauset Light, don’t miss the two other Cape Cod lighthouses in the area that, combined, are known as The Three Sisters.Â
- As you draw closer to Provincetown, you’ll find the Highland Light, also known as the Cape Cod Light. This gorgeous lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in 1797 and was only the 20th lighthouse in the country at the time. It’s open to the public on select dates this summer.Â
- If you want to feel like you’re at the end of the world and don’t mind a long and, at times, rugged adventure across the sand, don’t miss one of the most remote Cape Cod lighthouses, the Race Point Light in Provincetown. It’s open for public tours on select dates this summer.
- In the opposite direction, at the south end of the Cape, looking over at Martha’s Vineyard is the beautiful Nobska Light. This lovely Cape Cod lighthouse was first built in 1829, and though it’s no longer active, it’s available to the public at various times for tours. Â
